SUMMER TECHNIQUE CLASSES 

Summer Technique Classes are held in the Amherst Ballet facility at 29 Strong Street (next to Wildwood Elementary) on a state-of-the-art, sprung dance floor.  Classes are offered for dancers aged 12 – adult and are taught by Director Catherine Fair and Senior Instructor Sueann Townsend; guest teachers may also be announced.

Beginning Teen/Adult Ballet  Suitable for those who have never danced or have had some ballet but want to get a good work out while focusing on basic technique.

Mondays 7:00 – 8:30  (June 14, 21, 28; July  12, 19, 26; August 2, 9, 16, 23)

 

Intermediate Ballet  For Upper School dancers or adults who dance at the intermediate level.

Mondays 5:30 – 7:00  (June 14, 21, 28; July  12, 19, 26; August 16, 23)

Wednesdays 6:30 – 8:00  (June 16, 23, 30; July 7, 14, 21, 28; August 18, 25)

 

Intermediate/Advanced Ballet  Suitable for dancers in Levels B and C as well as serious adult students of ballet who have danced regularly throughout the past year.

Thursdays 5:30 – 7:00  (June 17, 24; July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; August 19, 26)

 

Modern Dance  Suitable for Upper School students and adults and teens who have had significant experience in Modern and/or Jazz Dance.

Wednesdays 5:00 – 6:30  (June 16, 23, 30; July 7, 14, 21, 28; August 18, 25)

Director Catherine Fair has taught ballet and jazz to hundreds of students in Massachusetts and Virginia, where she was the Artistic Director of the Southside School of Ballet and the Academy of Emporia Ballet.  Fair passed her teaching examinations with Merit in 1998 with The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and is an RAD certified teacher who has successfully entered many candidates in examinations.  She has attended teacher training in the Vaganova method at the Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet.  Fair has taught all levels of classical ballet at Amherst Ballet for 13 years and has directed all programs since 2001. 

Senior Instructor Sueann Townsend graduated from the Interlochen Center for the Arts as a dance scholarship student receiving the Fine Arts Award in Dance.  At New York Conservatory of dance she studied with prominent instructors Vladimir Davidov, Igor Youskevitch, Hector Zaraspe.  She has danced with Louisville Ballet, Dance Theater of Long Island, and Ramzi El-Edlibi Dance Company among others.  Sueann has studied the Vaganova method under the instruction of Monica Rostomian, a graduate of the Vaganova School Teacher Training Program in St. Petersburg.  Sueann specializes in classical variations, repertoire and modern dance and has taught both students and professional dancers since 1997.

AMHERST BALLET is a non-profit organization run by a volunteer Board of Directors and is dedicated to dance education and professional training.  Amherst Ballet students regularly train in a variety of dance disciplines with classical ballet as the foundation.  In the past few years, our dancers have auditioned for and been accepted to these summer programs:  Ailey School Summer Intensive Program, American Academy of Ballet, American Ballet Theater Summer Intensive (NYC), Moscow’s Bolshoi Academy, Boston Ballet School, Joffrey Ballet School, Kirov Academy of Ballet, Orlando Ballet School, Miami City Ballet School, Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, Richmond Ballet, Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts, North Carolina School for the Arts, and Virginia School of the Arts.
